A rare gem lies at the heart of this programme: Mozart’s quintet for glass harmonica, flute, oboe, viola, and cello. The crystalline sound of the glass harmonica — an instrument that caused a sensation in the 18th century — evokes the atmosphere of a Wunderkammer or cabinet of curiosities, where the extraordinary and the unexpected come together. Around this unique work, music by Mozart’s contemporaries is presented — intimate chamber pieces and surprising discoveries that share the same spirit of curiosity and experimentation. A programme full of discoveries, where the familiar and the unknown meet.

Raised in Mechelen by his aunt Margaret of Austria, Charles V discovered the melancholic polyphony of de La Rue and his contemporaries. Later, Brussels became his residence, with the Capilla Flamenca at the Coudenberg Palace. His world unfolds here through music: Mille regretz by Josquin, which became in Spain “La canción del Emperador”, performed in Antwerp by Susato, as well as laments, pastorals, and lute intabulations. His motto Plus Oultre also resonates. The epilogue moves from Susato to Gombert and de La Rue: from the lament against Fortune to a unique epitaph from Margaret’s court, whose sources are today preserved at the Mont des Arts.
